나그네와 진실

나그네가 혼자서 사막을 여행하고 있었습니다. 나그네는 신에게 경배를 드리기 우해 사원을 찾고 있었습니다. 나그네는 사막으로 들어서기 전에 지나온 마을에서 사원으로 가는 길을 물어 보았습니다. 사람들은 사원으로 가기 위해서는 사막을 통과해야 한다고 말했습니다. 그래서 나그네는 혼자 넓은 사막을 돌아다니면서 사원으로 가는 길을 찾고 있었던 것입니다. 

나그네는 열심히 사막을 가로질러 걸어갔습니다. 하지만 아무리 걸어가도 끝없는 사막만 이어질 뿐 사원은 보이지 않았습니다. 나그네는 무더운 날씨와 갈증 때문에 죽을 지경이었습니다. 다시 돌아갈까 하는 생각도 했지만 신에게 경배를 드리는 일을 그만둘 수는 없었습니다. 

나구네는 무더위와 갈증을 참고 계속 사막을 따라 걸어갔습니다. 그러다가 나그네는 어떤 여자를 발견했습니다. 그 여자는 눈을 감고 꼼짝도 하지 않았습니다.

나그네가 그 여자에게 물었습니다.

"당신은 누구입니까?"

그러자 여자가 눈을 뜨고 대답했습니다.

"나는 진실입니다."

나그네는 알 수 없다는 표정을 지으면서 다시 물었습니다.

"그런데 왜 마을을 떠나 이런 곳에서 살고 있습니까?"

진실은 슬픈 얼굴로 나그네에게 대답했습니다.

"처음에는 사람들이 모두 진실했습니다. 그런데 거짓말을 하는 사람이 몇 명 생기더니, 시간이 갈수록 눈덩이처럼 불어났습니다. 그리고 이제는 어디를 가더라도 거짓말을 하는 사람들만 있습니다. 그들이 나를 이곳으로 내쫒았답니다. 당신이 마을에서 만났던 사람들도 모두 거짓말을 하는 사람들 입니다."

그렇게 말하고 나서 진실은 다시 눈을 감았습니다. 그리고 그곳에서 꼼짝도 하지 않았습니다.

나그네는 비로소 사막에서 사원을 찾을 수 없다는 사실을 깨닫고 집으로 돌아갔습니다.

진실의 이야기 속에서 우리가 깨달을 수 있는 사실이 있습니다. 그 것은 거짓말은 하면 할수록 늘어난다는 것입니다 처음에는 조그맣던 거짓말이 점점 늘어나 진실은 사라지고 온통 거짓말로 꾸며지게 되는 것입니다.

사막에는 나그네가 찾는 사원이 정말 있었을까요?

진실은 무엇 때문에 사막에서 눈을 감고 있었던 것일가요? 그리고 누가 진실을 사막으로 내쫒았습니까?

진실은 거짓말의 성질에 대해 말했습니다. 진실이 말한 거짓말의 성질은 어떤 것인가요? 

A traveller was journeying alone through the desert, searching for a temple to worship the gods. Before entering the desert, the traveller asked for directions to the temple in the village he had passed through. The villagers said that he had to cross the desert to reach the temple, so the traveller wandered alone in the vast desert, looking for the way to the temple.

The traveller diligently walked across the desert. However, no matter how far he walked, he saw only endless desert and no temple. Due to the scorching heat and thirst, he was on the verge of death. He thought about turning back but couldn’t give up on worshiping the gods.

The traveller endured the heat and thirst and continued walking through the desert. Then he discovered a woman. The woman had her eyes closed and was motionless.

The traveller asked the woman,

“Who are you?”

The woman opened her eyes and replied,

“I am Truth.”

The traveller, with a puzzled expression, asked again,

“Why did you leave the village and live in this place?”

Truth answered the traveller with a sad face,

“At first, everyone was truthful. But then a few people started lying, and over time, it snowballed. Now, wherever I go, there are only people who lie. They drove me out to this place. The people you met in the village are all liars.”

After saying this, Truth closed her eyes again and remained motionless.

The traveller finally realized he could not find the temple in the desert and returned home.

We can learn from the story of Truth that lies multiply the more they are told. Initially, small lies grow, and eventually, the truth disappears, leaving only lies.
