노력의 삶

 

신들의 왕 제우스 신이 첫번째 남자와 첫번째 여자를 만들었을때 일이야. 여러 날에 걸쳐 정성스럽게 남자와 여자를 만든 제우스 신은 헤르메스 신을 불러 자신이 만든 창작물을 흐믓하게 바라보며 말하였지

“너는 지금부터 두 사람을 데리고 땅으로 내려가, 그들에게 앞으로 살아갈 방법을 가르쳐 주거라, 먹을 수 있는 열매와 풀의 종류를 가르쳐 주고, 농사를 지으면서 살 수 있도록 땅을 경작하는 방법을 가르쳐 주러라.”

남자와 여자는 방금 만들어졌기 때문에 아무것도 모르고 있었지. 남자와 여자는 헤르메스 신을 따라 길을 떠났지

헤르메스 신은 제우스 신이 일러준 대로 남자와 여자가 알아야 할 것들을 이것저것 알려주었지. 그런 다음 대지의 신을 찾아갔어.

헤르메스 신은 대지의 신에게 부탁했지.

“대지의 신이여, 남자와 여자에게 땅을 경작할 수 있도록 허락해 주십시오. 그들은 나약해서 땅을 경작하지 않으면 먹을 것을 얻기가 힘듭니다.”

그러나 대지의 신은 헤르메스 신의 부탁을 거절했지.

“그 부탁은 들어줄 수가 없소. 풀과 나무들이 스스로 자랄 수 있도록 땅을 자유롭게 해주어야 합니다. 사람들이 땅을 경작하도록 허락하면 그드이 아름다운 이 땅을 어떻게 망쳐놓을지 누가 알겠습니까? 절대로 허락할 수 없소.”

“이것은 제우스 신의 명령입니다 당신은 제수스 신의 명령을 거역할 생각입니까?”

제우슨 신의 명령이란 말에 대지의 신은 잠시 생각에 잠겼지. 이윽고 대지의 신은 헤르메스 신을 향해 말했지.

“그렇다면 할 수 없지요. 하지만 사람들은 먹을 것을 얻기 위해 땅을 경작하는 대가로 땀과 눈물을 흘려야 할 것입니다.”

 

사람은 살아기기 위해 반드시 땀을 흘리고 노력해야만 해. 그것이 사람에게 주어진 운명인 것이지. 대지는 사람에게 먹고 살 수 있는 온갖 곡식과 열매을 주지만, 그것을 얻기 위해 어려움과 고통을 견디지 않을수 없거든. 그러므로 우리는 무엇보다 먼저 참고 인내하는 방법을 배워야해.

 

The Life of Effort

 

When the king of the gods, Zeus, created the first man and the first woman, he took great care over several days. Zeus admired his creations with a sense of pride and called upon Hermes, the messenger god, to instruct them on how to live.

“Take these two individuals down to Earth,” Zeus commanded Hermes. “Teach them how to survive. Show them the types of edible fruits and plants. Teach them how to cultivate the land so they can sustain themselves.”

The man and woman were newly created and knew nothing. Following Hermes, they embarked on their journey to Earth. Hermes diligently imparted the knowledge Zeus had instructed him to share with them. Then, they sought out the god of the Earth.

Hermes made a plea to the Earth god. “Grant permission for the man and woman to cultivate the land. They are weak and won’t survive without tilling the soil to obtain food.”

However, the Earth god refused Hermes’ request. “I cannot allow that. Let the grass and trees grow freely. If I permit humans to cultivate the land, who knows how they will harm this beautiful Earth? I absolutely cannot allow it.”

“But this is Zeus’ command,” Hermes insisted. “Are you defying Zeus’ orders?”

The Earth god paused, lost in thought at the mention of Zeus’ command. Eventually, he addressed Hermes. “Very well, I have no choice. However, humans must toil and shed sweat and tears to obtain the fruits of the Earth.”

Indeed, humans must work hard and exert effort to survive. It is their destiny. While the Earth provides various grains and fruits for sustenance, obtaining them requires endurance and perseverance. Therefore, we must learn patience and resilience above all else.
