까마귀와 해르메스

 

언제나 여기저기를 바쁘게 날아다니면서 수다스럽게 남의 일에 참견하기 좋아하는 까마귀가 있었습니다.

 

어느 날 자기가 본 것들을 친구들에게 자랑하려고 서둘러 날아가던 까마귀는 그만 사람들이 쳐놓은 덫에 걸리고 말았습니다. 덫에 걸린 까마귀는 있는 힘을 다해 날개짓을 하면서 빠져나오려고 했지만, 올가미는 점점 더 발목을 조일 뿐이었습니다.

 

몹시 다급한 처지에 놓인 까마귀는 평소에 잘 심기지도 않던 아폴로 신을 부르기 시작했습니다.

 

“아폴로님, 아폴로님, 불쌍한 저를 구해 주세요. 저를 구해 주신다면 아폴로님의 제단에 값진 재물을 바치겠습니다.”

 

까마귀의 기도를 들은 아폴로 신은 미소를 지으면서 올가미를 풀어 주었습니다. 자유를 되찾은 까마귀는 까악까악 소리를 지르면서 신나게 하늘로 날아올랐습니다.

 

“이번에는 운이 나빴던 거야. 설마 또 다시 덫에 걸리는 일은 없겠지. 앞으로는 조심해서 날아다니면 돼.”

 

몇 달이 지나자 까마귀는 덫에 걸렸던 일과 아폴로 신에게 한 맹세를 까맣게 잊었습니다. 그래서 더 이상 덫을 피해 조심스럽게 날아다니지 않게 되었습니다.

 

그러던 어느 날 까마귀는 또다시 덫에 걸리고 말았습니다. 까마귀는 다시 아폴로 신에게 기도했습니다.

 

“아폴로님, 부디 불쌍한 저를 구해 주세요. 저를 구해주신다면 이번에는 반드시 재물을 바치겠습니다.”

 

그러나 아폴로 신은 들은 척도 하지 않았습니다. 까마귀는 화를 내면서 투덜거렸습니다.

“어디 신이 아폴로 신 하나뿐이가? 아폴로 신이 내 기도를 들어주지 않는다면 다른 신에게 기도하면 되지 뭐.”

 

까마귀는 더욱 애절한 목소리로 헤르메스 신을 부르기 시작했습니다.

 

“헤르메스님, 해르메스님. 힘없고 가엾은 이 까마귀를 구해 주세요. 저를 구해주신다면 이 세상에서 가장 귀하고 값비싼 제물을 바치겠습니다.

 

그러자 헤르메스 신은 코웃음을 치면서 까마귀에게 이렇게 대답했습니다.

 

“이런 못된 까마귀 같으니라구! 첫번째 한 서약도 지키지 않았다너 너를 내가 어떻게 믿을 수 있겠느냐?”

 

어렵고 힘든 때 도움으 주었던 친구를, 어려운 일이 해결되었다고 해서 모르는 척하거나 약속을 잊어버려서는 안됩니다. 어려운 일은 한 번으로 끝나느 것이 아니라, 언제 어느 때든지 다시 찾아오기 마련입니다. 좋을 때에는 잊고 재내다가 어려운 일이 있을 때에만 찾아오는 친구는 누구에게도 환영받지 못한다는 사실을 기억해야 합니다.

The Crow and Hermes

There was a crow who loved to fly around busily and meddle in others’ affairs while chattering away.

One day, the crow, eager to boast about what it had seen to its friends, hurriedly flew off and got caught in a trap set by humans. The crow, caught in the trap, flapped its wings with all its might to escape, but the snare only tightened around its ankle.

In a desperate situation, the crow began to call upon Apollo, whom it rarely prayed to.

“Apollo, Apollo, please save me. If you save me, I will offer valuable sacrifices at your altar.”

Hearing the crow’s prayer, Apollo smiled and released the snare. The freed crow cawed loudly and joyfully flew up into the sky.

“This time, I was unlucky. Surely, I won’t get caught in a trap again. I’ll just be more careful when flying around.”

Months passed, and the crow completely forgot about being caught in the trap and the vow it made to Apollo. It no longer flew cautiously to avoid traps.

One day, the crow got caught in a trap again. The crow prayed to Apollo once more.

“Apollo, please save me. If you save me this time, I will offer sacrifices.”

However, Apollo did not respond. The crow grumbled angrily.

“Is Apollo the only god? If Apollo doesn’t listen to my prayer, I’ll pray to another god.”

The crow began to call upon Hermes in an even more desperate voice.

“Hermes, Hermes, please save this helpless and pitiful crow. If you save me, I will offer the most precious sacrifices in the world.”

Hermes scoffed and replied to the crow,

“You wicked crow! You didn’t keep your first vow. How can I trust you?”

We should not ignore our promises to friends who helped us in challenging times because the problem is resolved. Difficulties do not end with one occurrence; they can come back anytime. Remember that friends who only come to you when they are in trouble and forget you when things are good are not welcomed by anyone.

Skye flew down and said, “Chase, you didn’t keep your promise to Ryder. How can I trust you?”

The lesson here is to always keep your promises, especially to those who help you in tough times. Problems can come back, and it’s important to remember the friends who stood by you.
