As the dawn sky remained shrouded in darkness, the cool air was gently illuminated by the small lanterns of the temple. The melodic sound of wind chimes filled the space, and the pond displayed shimmering lotus flowers that had just opened. Practitioners began their morning prayers and meditations, but one disciple found himself puzzled by his recurring awakenings between 3:00 and 5:00 a.m.
Seeking guidance, he approached the Buddha and voiced his confusion. The Buddha, with a gentle smile, explained that this hour was meant for him to be awake. He elaborated that while others may still be in deep sleep, the dawn is a significant time, closest to the spiritual realm, where one's mind is clear and open to introspection. The disciple learned that this period, referred to as the "time of the Buddha," allows for a deeper connection with one's inner self and the potential for spiritual growth.
The Buddha shared that the energy within the human body flows in cycles, with the hours between three and five associated with the lungs. He asked the disciple if he often felt a tightness in his chest or an urge to take deep breaths upon waking, affirming that these sensations are natural processes of purification. Rising at this hour signifies that the body and mind are returning to their purest states, indicating a moment to reflect on past experiences and the consequences of one's actions, or karma. In essence, the disciple's early awakenings were not coincidental but rather invitations for personal and spiritual evolution.
The Buddha gazed quietly at a leaf falling onto the pond and said, “Just as the leaf falls and gradually dissolves into the water, the heavy burdens within you can be washed away during this time. It is a period when your mind opens and your soul is purified. At this hour, you can return to your purest and clearest state. By breathing in the dawn air and calming your breath, you can connect with your soul.”
Placing a hand on his chest, the Buddha continued, “Waking at this time means you are ready to attain a higher consciousness. Do not let this opportunity pass. Clear your mind and begin the day anew. This hour is also when negative energies depart. It provides a chance for your negative thoughts and emotions to dissipate. As you exhale with a pure heart, release all anxiety and worry with your breath.”
Looking at the sky, the Buddha spoke softly, “The deepest darkness comes just before dawn breaks. The moment you feel most weary and exhausted is when a new beginning is near. This hour is a time to connect with the Buddha’s teachings, as the wisdom flows most strongly during this period. Your inner self awakens, longing to hear that wisdom.” Closing his eyes and taking a deep breath, the Buddha said, “By waking at this time, you have already taken a step toward the Buddha’s path.”
Deeply moved, the disciple quietly stepped back. The Buddha continued gently, “Waking at this hour means there are specific things you must do. It is about purifying your mind and rightly beginning your day.” The Buddha then recommended the following practices:
“First, breathe deeply. The dawn air is the purest, filled with energy that purifies your soul. Inhale slowly, filling your entire body with this clean energy.” Demonstrating, the Buddha took a deep breath. “Deep breathing is not merely an act; it is a process of emptying your mind and embracing new energy. When you inhale, take in the purity of the universe; when you exhale, release your worries and anxieties.
Second, offer a short prayer. Quietly call upon the name of the Buddha you believe in and offer a prayer for the day. This will set the right direction for you.” The Buddha clasped his hands and offered a silent prayer. “By following the Buddha’s teachings, vow to live with wisdom and compassion today. Pray for peace within the Buddha’s principles throughout your day.
Thirdly, cultivate gratitude. Be thankful for being alive and for breathing in this moment. A grateful heart will make your day more transparent and more peaceful.” Looking at a lotus floating on the pond, the Buddha said, “The lotus blooms beautifully even in the mud. You, too, must be grateful for what you have and find happiness despite your lack. Let go of desires and focus on this moment—that is the path of the wise.”
Focusing on the disciple, the Buddha said, “Meditation is not merely sitting still; it is the process of clearing your mind. When you maintain a pure heart, the Buddha’s teachings will reside within you.”
The Buddha continued softly, “Those who awaken at this hour are destined for a special mission. You are meant to realize the Buddha’s teachings and pursue that path.” The disciple listened attentively. “Many awaken at this time, but those who do not understand its significance may return to sleep. However, for those who comprehend its meaning, their lives will begin to transform.”
Placing a hand on his chest, the Buddha stated, “From three to five in the morning is a time that signifies your readiness for change. Your soul is prepared to grow, which is why you seek the meaning of waking now. If you make good use of this time, the confusion in your mind will fade, and you will gain strong inner strength.” Pointing to a sturdy bodhi tree, the Buddha remarked, “A tree sways in the wind but does not fall if its roots are deep. If you strengthen your mind during this time, you too will remain unshaken amid life’s storms.”
Furthermore, this time can change the direction of your life. It is a moment when you may discover a new path and realize what you must do. If you strengthen your mind during this time, you too will remain unshaken amid life’s storms.”
Furthermore, this time can change the direction of your life. It is a moment when you may discover a new path and realize what you must do. The Buddha smiled and said, "This is the time when you truly realize what you desire. Dawn signifies the opening of a new day, and your life, too, will greet a new beginning with this dawn. Furthermore, your enlightenment deepens. Those who awaken at this hour attain a deeper understanding. Your soul is ready to ascend to a higher plane, and you will gain greater wisdom."
As dawn deepened, the temple bell rang softly, and the cool morning air gently brushed against the disciple's skin. Reflecting on the Buddha's teachings from the past few days, he realized that the hours from three to five in the morning were not meant for sleeping. Yet, a lingering question remained in his heart. Approaching the Buddha cautiously with clasped hands, he said, "Buddha, I now understand that this time is not a coincidence. However, there is one more thing I wish to know."
The Buddha looked at him quietly and asked, "What is it that you wish to know?"
The disciple spoke carefully, "I want to understand how waking between three and five in the morning affects our lives. What is the significance of this time for us?"
Gazing calmly at the pond, the Buddha replied, "Waking at this hour is evidence that change is coming to you. It signifies that your soul is ready to embark on a new path. Thus, if you awaken at this time, your destiny will begin to transform."
Surprised, the disciple asked, "Buddha, what kind of changes will we encounter during this time?"
The Buddha closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and then opened them, saying, "Those who awaken at this hour will experience five transformations of destiny." Spreading his hands, the Buddha began to explain.
"First, your inner strength grows. If you make good use of this time, the confusion in your mind will disappear, and you will gain strong inner resilience." Pointing to a sturdy bodhi tree, the Buddha said, "A tree sways in the wind but never falls if its roots are deep. If you strengthen your mind during this time, you will remain unshaken amid any hardship."
The disciple nodded quietly. "Buddha, I sometimes feel swayed by external circumstances. How can I make my mind stronger?"
The Buddha smiled gently and replied, "It depends on your mindset. When you awaken at this hour, ask yourself what you truly want and where you must go. Then, seek the right path to achieve it, and your mind will naturally grow stronger. Secondly, the direction of your life changes. This is the time when you discover a new path in life, realizing what you must do and what you genuinely desire." Smiling, the Buddha continued, "Dawn is the time to embrace a new beginning with the opening of a new day."
The disciple fell into deep thought. "Buddha, I sometimes feel uncertain about whether my path is right. How can I know the direction of my life?"
Gazing at the pond, the Buddha said, "When the water in a pond is murky, you cannot see its depths. But when the water settles, you can see what lies within. If you quiet your mind and look within, your path will become clear. Thirdly, your enlightenment deepens." Looking at the pond, the Buddha continued, "Just as clear water reveals its depth when your mind becomes clear, you will attain deeper awakening. Do not waste this time; make it an opportunity to gain wisdom."
The disciple nodded quietly, reflecting on himself. "Fourthly, past karma is purified." The Buddha spread his hands. "Waking at this time means your past karma is being cleansed. The past must no longer bind you and must move toward a new path."
The disciple recalled his past. "Buddha, I sometimes cannot let go of my mistakes and regrets. Are these part of my karma?"
The Buddha nodded quietly. "Yes, the regrets and attachments lingering in your heart are indeed your karma. But waking at this time means you are ready to release them. Everyone must live their destined path. Lastly, you receive the Buddha's protection."
The Buddha gently spoke to the disciple one final time, "Have you come to realize that the hours between three and five in the morning are not just time but a crucial period for your soul's growth and transformation?" The disciple bowed deeply, feeling profoundly enlightened. With a gentle smile, the Buddha continued, "Your day is shaped at dawn. Waking at this hour signifies that you are ready to ascend to a higher plane. Do not waste this time; use it for your soul's development."
As he gazed at a leaf floating on the pond, the Buddha concluded, "When dawn calls you, respond with joy. Doing so will bring about a change in your life." The disciple, filled with gratitude, bowed deeply to the Buddha.
If you often awaken between three and five in the morning, it may be the Buddha's call to you. Have you received this call? If so, please leave "Guanyin Bodhisattva" in the comments below. The Buddha's compassionate grace will remain with you, and your sincere prayers will be answered.
