Hermes’ Chariot and Arain
People living on Earth didn’t pay much attention to the gods residing on Mount Olympus. Their daily struggles made it difficult for them to focus on anything else. Moreover, since the gods rarely intervened in human affairs, performing rituals and seeking blessings from them wasn’t a priority.
Hermes, the messenger of the gods, grew increasingly frustrated with this lack of faith. He decided to punish those who didn’t believe in the gods by loading his chariot with all sorts of deceitful acts and tricks. He descended to the mortal world, distributing his burden across different nations as he traveled from one place to another.
However, when he reached the Arab region, his chariot suddenly broke down. The Arab people, mistaking Hermes’ valuable cargo for riches, stole it and fled. Hermes couldn’t divide his burden among them anymore.
This tale reflects the consequences of losing faith. Even when faced with challenges, maintaining faith and trust is essential. Just as Hermes’ chariot was filled with deceit, our hearts should be filled with unwavering belief. 😊
헤르메스의 전차와 아라인
지상에서 살고 있는 사람들은 울림푸스 산에서 머무르고 있는 신들에 대해 별로 관심이 없었지. 왜냐하면 하루하루 살아가는 일이 너무나 힘들어서 다른 일에 신경을 쓸 만한 겨를이 없기 때문이야. 게다가 신들이 사람들에게 도움을 주는 것이 거의 없다고 생각했기 때문에 신들에게 제사를 지내고 복을 비는 일을 중요하게 생각하지 않았어.
헤르메스 신은 그런 사실 때문에 몹시 화가 나서 신을 믿지 않는 사람들에게 벌을 주고 싶어, 온갖 거짓 악행과 속임수를 전차에 채워서 몰고 세상으로 내려갔지.
헤르메스 신은 대지의 이쪽 끝에서 저쪽 끝까지 달리며 지나가는 나라마다 그의 짐을 조금씩 나눠주었지. 그래서 전차가 지나간 나라에는 도둑과 사기꾼 그리고 여러가지 나쁜 짓을 하는 사람들이 전보다 많아졌지.
그런데 아랍 지방에 도착했을 때, 전차는 갑자기 고장이 났고, 아랍인들은 헤르메스 신이 값비싼 보화를 운반하는 것이라 생각해 짐들을 훔쳐 달아났지. 헤르메스 신은 더이상 전차의 짐을 나눠줄수 없었지.
이솝이 살았던 시대에는 그리스와 아랍의 사이가 그렇게 좋지 않아서 그리스와 아랍은 지중해를 차지하려고 치열한 전쟁을 벌이기도 했지 그래서 이런 우화가 만들어진 것이야. 이 세상에서 어떤 나라에 특별히 나쁜 사람이 더 많은 것은 아니지 마찬가지로 좋은 사람이 어느 나라에 특별히 더 많은 것도 아니고 우리는 항상 정직하게 살아갈 수 있도록 열심히 노력해야하지.
