Incurable Promises
A poor man fell seriously ill. His wife called for a doctor. The doctor arrived and examined him, but the illness was so severe that there was no hope of recovery.
“Doctor, how is he? Is there a chance for him to recover?” The patient asked in a weak voice.
“It’s difficult. The likelihood of recovery is almost nonexistent. It’s best to abandon hope and prepare mentally.” The doctor replied and left.
The patient’s wife summoned a priest. “Sister, please save me.” The sick man pleaded. However, the priest had no way to cure the disease either. “It’s impossible.” But the patient persisted with the priest. “If I recover, I promise to offer 100 oxen and 100 sheep to God. So please, beg God to spare my life.” “Understood. I will pray.” Moved by the patient’s desperate situation, the priest promised to pray and left. After the priest departed, the patient’s wife asked, “Where will you find so much money?” The patient replied, “Don’t worry. Even if I recover, I won’t keep the promise. God won’t pressure me to fulfill it.”
We often encounter people who make unkeepable promises, especially when they are in dire straits. However, once they escape their predicament, they often act as if they never made such promises. Even in challenging circumstances, we must strive to keep our promises, no matter how difficult they may be. 😊
지킬수 없는 약속
가난한 사람이 심한 병에 걸렸지. 그 사람의 아내가 의사를 불러왔어
의사가 와서 진찰했지만 그 병은 워낙 심각한 것이어서 살아날 가망이 없었지.
“의사 선생님, 어떤가요? 회복될 수 있을까요?”
환자가 힘없는 목소리로 물었지.
“어렵습니다. 회복될 가능성은 거의 없습니다 그만 희망을 버리고 마음의 준비를 하는 것이 좋을 것입니다.”
의사는 그렇게 대답하고 돌아가 버렸지. 환자의 아내는 신부를 불러왔지.
“신부님, 제발 저를 좀 살려 주십시요.”
병에 걸린 남자가 말했습니다. 하지만 신부에게도 그 병을 치료할 방법은 없었지.
“불가능한 일입니다.”
하지만 환자는 끝까지 신부에게 매달렸지.
“만약 제가 회복되기만 한다면 신에게 황소 100마리와 양100마리를 바치겠습니다. 그러니까 제발 저를 살려 달라고 신에게 빌어 주십시오.”
“알겠습니다. 기도를 해 보겠습니다.”
환자가 너무나 애처롭게 사정하자, 신부는 신에게 기도를 해 보겠다고 약속하고 돌아갔지.
신부가 돌아가자 환자의 아내가 물었어.
“그 많은 돈을 어디에서 구할 거에요?”
그러자 환자가 대답했지.
“걱정하지 마시오, 나는 회복되어도 약속을 지키지 않을 것이오. 신이 나에게 약속을 지키라고 독촉하지 않을 테니까 말이오.”
우리는 지킬 수 없는 약속을 남발하는 사람들을 많이 볼수있지. 특히 자신이 궁지에 처했을 때 사람들은 더욱 많은 약속을 하게 되있지. 하지만 궁지에서 벗어나면 자신이 언제 그런 약속을 했느냐는 듯이 행동하는 경우가 많아. 우리는 아무리 어려운 처지에서 한 약속이라도 반드시 지키기 위해 노력해야해.
