황금알을 낳는 암탉
어떤 남자가 아름다운 암탉 한마리를 기르고 있었습니다. 그런데 그 암탉이 아니었습니다. 그 암탉은 황금알을 낳는 특별한 닭이 었습니다.

‘암탉은 하루에 한 개씩만 황금알을 낳잖아. 하지만 저 암탉의 뱃속에는 수많은 황금알이 들어 있을 거야. 그걸 한꺼번에 꺼내서 내다 팔면 나는 큰 부자가 될 수 있어. 그래, 알을 하나씩 낳기를 기다리지 말고 암탉을 잡아서 알을 모두 꺼내야지.’
그 남자는 곧 암탉을 잡아서 배를 갈랐습니다. 남자는 서둘러 암탉의 뱃속을 들여다보았습니다. 그러나 많은 황금알이 들어 있을 거라고 생각했던 암탉의 뱃속은 다른 암탉과 똑같았습니다.
그렇게 해서 암탉은 죽어버렸고, 그 남자는 이제 더 이상 황금알을 가질 수 없게 되었습니다.
암탉의 주인은 자신의 어리석음을 한탄했습니다.
“아! 나는 왜 이렇게 어리석단 말인가. 큰 욕심을 부리다가 아무것도 얻을 수 없게 되고 말았구나.”
하지만 후회해도 소용없는 일이었습니다.
탐욕스러운 마음은 결국 그 대가를 치르게 됩니다. 암탉의 주인이 지나친 욕심을 부리지 않고 암탉을 잘 길렀다면 날마다 황금알을 얻을 수 있었을 것입니다. 무리하게 욕심을 부린 나머지 모든 것을 잃고 말았습니다.
