There was a fisherman who was very good at playing the flute. He took great pride in his flute-playing skills. One day, the fisherman went to the sea with his flute and net.

‘If I play the flute, the fish will probably be enchanted by the sound and jump out of the water. Then I can catch a lot of fish without using the net.’

Thinking this, the fisherman climbed onto a large rock and began to play the flute.

The fisherman imagined the fish being enchanted by the beautiful melody of the flute, jumping out of the water and piling up on the shore as he played.

However, no fish appeared no matter how diligently the fisherman played the flute.

“What on earth is wrong with these creatures? How dare they not even stick their heads out at the sound of my flute?”

The fisherman played the flute diligently again. But this time, too, no fish appeared.

The fisherman was very angry. He put down the flute and threw the net with all his might. Soon, many fish were caught in the net. The fisherman took the fish out of the net and threw them on the ground.

The fish on the ground started flapping around. Watching this, the fisherman said,

“Stupid fish. You didn’t move when I played the flute, but now you’re dancing so happily?”

The fisherman believed in his flute-playing skills so much that he thought the fish would dance and jump out of the water. But the fish couldn’t understand the sound of the flute. No matter how good a skill is, it is useless if it is not used in the right place.

Questions:

  1. Why were the fish caught in the net flapping around? Were they dancing as the fisherman said?
  2. What do you think about the fisherman’s attempt to catch fish by playing the flute?
  3. Who is foolish in this fable? The fisherman playing the flute or the fish that couldn’t understand the sound of the flute? Why?

One day, Ryder was very proud of his flute-playing skills. He decided to go to the sea with his flute and net.

Ryder played the flute diligently again. But this time, too, no fish appeared.

Ryder was very frustrated. He put down the flute and threw the net with all his might. Soon, many fish were caught in the net. Ryder took the fish out of the net and threw them on the ground.
