겨울과 봄

사람들은 따뜻한 봄이 되면 몹시 좋아하지만, 추운 겨울이 찾아오는 것은 무척 싫어했습니다. 겨울은 사람들이 언제나 봄만 찬미하고 기다리는 것이 매우 못마땅했습니다. 그래서 봄에게 시비를 걸었지요.

겨울은 봄을 비난했습니다. 봄이 되면 사람들은 온통 마음이 들떠서 숲이나 초원을 돌아다닌다는 것입니다. 그러다가 어떤 사람들은 백합이나 장미를 꺾어서 연인의 머리에 꽂아 주기도 하고, 또 어떤 사람들은 사나운 폭풍이나 홍수조차도 두려워하지 않고 배를 타고 먼 바다 저편에 사는 사람들을 만나러 가기도 한다는 것입니다. 

"한 마디로 봄만 되면 사람들은 어리석은 행동을 한단 말 이야."

그러나 봄은 겨울의 말을 가만히 듣고만 있었습니다. 그러자 겨울은 더욱 신이 나서 자신의 힘을 자랑했습니다. 

"그에 비해서 나는 독재자와도 같이 모든 것을 내 마음대로 할 수 있어. 나는 사람들로 하여금 추위에 떨면서 감히 사나운 하늘을 쳐다보지도 못하고 땅만 쳐다보면서 살게 할 수 있어. 그렇지 않으면 한참 동안이나 눈 속에 갇혀서 꼼짝도 하지 않고 집만 지키게 할 수도 있어."

그러자 봄이 부드러운 미소를 지으면서 대답했습니다. 

"그래서 사람들이 겨울이 가면 그렇게 좋아하는 모양이구나. 네가 아무리 힘이 세다고 자랑해도 사람들은 이 세상에서 가장 아름답고 좋은 것이 봄이라고 믿고 있단다. 그래서 내가 사라지면 사람들은 나에 대한 아름다운 추억을 간직하고 있다가 내가 다시 돌아오면 그토록 기뻐하는 거야."

 

힘으로 사람들을 굴복시킬 수는 있지만 그 마음까지 얻을 수는 없습니다. 존경은 억압이나 폭력으로 얻어지는 것이 아닙니다. 다른 사람들에게 따뜻하고 부드럽게 대해 주어야만 존경받을 수 있다는 것을 명심해야 합니다.

Winter criticizes spring. People are so excited when spring comes that they roam around forests and meadows. Some pick lilies or roses to put in their lover’s hair, and some, not even afraid of fierce storms or floods, take a boat to meet people living far across the sea.

“In other words, when spring comes, people act foolishly.”

However, spring just listened to Winter’s words quietly. Then, winter became more excited and boasted about its power.

“Compared to that, I can do everything as I please, like a dictator. I can make people shiver in the cold, dare not look at the fierce sky, and only at the ground. Otherwise, I can keep them trapped in the snow for a long time, not moving and only guarding their homes.”

Then, spring replied with a gentle smile.

“So, people are so happy when winter goes. No matter how much you boast about your strength, people believe spring is the most beautiful and good thing in this world. So, when I disappear, people cherish beautiful memories of me, and when I return, they are so happy.”
